Red Bull launches an ultimatum and Ferrari closes in band – AlKhaleej Today

By Staff , in Biofuels , at October 17, 2020

In case everything that is happening is no longer worrisome enough, it seems that starting next week, we will have a new disagreement. On October 26, it is scheduled in Portimao a meeting that for the future of the Formula 1, It may be even more important than all those we had to establish the new regulations that will apply from 2022 or the most recent ones on the pact of harmony.

At this meeting, the basis for the new engines should begin to be discussed. In principle, these “new” engines should arrive from 2026. But after the recent scare of Honda, everything has changed in a hasty way.

Red Bull has issued an ultimatum. Either the propellants are frozen from 2021, or it is more than possible, that two teams leave the great circus. Of course these two teams would be themselves and AlphaTauri.

It seems that the idea they have is clear. They want to continue using for a while, the engine that Honda will leave them at the end of next year.

Those of Milton Keynes have taken stock after Honda announced that it would end its participation in Formula 1 at the end of 2021. None of the four options that are on the table to motorize them, Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault or using the Honda heritage on their own seems optimal for them. Not for a racing team that wants to be world champion.

Being a customer of Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault means paying to accept the engine that they deliver to you. And the other possible solution, which is to carry on the Honda legacy, costs a lot of money and only works if engine regulations are frozen. All this while waiting to convince a motorist to enter F1 and have him as an ‘official team’, something complicated with the current rules.

To many, these threats may seem like a bluff. But this time, it seems that they are serious. Today’s engines are so complicated and expensive that it seems completely unworkable. And to all this, we must add the intention that the great circus has that in 2022 the engine works with 20% biofuel and worse in 2023 when 100% bio fuel is adopted.

All this will exert great pressure in the meeting on the 26th. Mercedes seems to be the team that could be more in line with Red Bull. Renault could also be, if along the way it is achieved that the difference between the different engines is a maximum of 10CV. But at Ferrari they are opposed to all of them, all of them.

After everything that happened with their propellant in recent months, they do not agree at all on a supposed freeze. Those of Maranello believe that motorsport is called motorsport precisely because motors must be an important part of the package.

For Ferrari, it is out of the question that the biofuel project is suspended just because Red Bull wants to get away with it. At Maranello he believes that this development is too important for the future of sport.

We will see what happens on the 26th. Hopefully positions will be brought closer together, because if not, we may be at the beginning of the end.
